Urolithin A
A gut-derived metabolite of pomegranate polyphenols that's become a longevity favorite for renewing tired mitochondria (a process called mitophagy).
Benefits
- +May promote mitophagy (recycling of damaged mitochondria)
- +May improve muscle strength and endurance in older adults
- +May support cellular energy and healthy aging
- +Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
- +May support muscle recovery
Dosage & Cost
Only about a third of people produce meaningful urolithin A from dietary pomegranate/walnuts, which is why direct supplements (e.g. Mitopure) exist. Trials used 500–1000 mg.
Side Effects
- !Very well tolerated in clinical trials
- !Mild digestive upset possible
- !Limited long-term safety data
- !Direct supplementation is needed because many people's gut bacteria can't produce it from food
Food Sources
- • Pomegranates (precursors)
- • Walnuts
- • Raspberries and strawberries
- • Note: the body must convert these via gut bacteria, which varies widely between people
