Curcumin (Turmeric Extract)
The active compound in turmeric that gives it that golden color — it's one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatories, and genuinely impressive if you get the absorption right.
Benefits
- +Potent anti-inflammatory — may rival some pharmaceuticals in studies
- +Supports joint health and may reduce arthritis pain
- +Powerful antioxidant
- +May support brain health and cognitive function
- +Preliminary evidence for cancer-protective properties
- +May support cardiovascular health
Dosage & Cost
Plain curcumin has terrible bioavailability. Always look for formulations with piperine (black pepper extract) — it increases absorption by up to 2000%. Merivita and BCM-95 are other enhanced forms. Turmeric powder in cooking gives you very little active curcumin.
Side Effects
- !Digestive upset, bloating, or diarrhea
- !May thin blood — avoid before surgery or with blood thinners
- !Can stain teeth and clothes yellow
- !May interfere with some chemotherapy drugs (consult doctor)
- !Nausea at high doses
Food Sources
- • Turmeric root (spice)
- • Golden milk (turmeric latte)
- • Note: cooking with turmeric gives some benefit but supplementation is needed for therapeutic doses — and add black pepper to boost absorption
